From Furious to Focused: Using AI to Communicate Effectively Without Burning Bridges

Yelling at the red phone
Yelling at the red phone

We've all been there—frustrated, annoyed, or downright angry with a service provider. Whether it's a delayed response, poor customer service, or unmet expectations, emotions can quickly escalate. But sending an angry message can damage important professional relationships. Here's how AI can help save your sanity.

If you're like me and your patience wears thin at times AI can really help. I've written a few rants recently, pouring all my frustation into an email, talking around the world and not getting to the point. I sound crazy! This might mean my concerns will be dismissed.....again, and I don't want that. I want to be taken seriously and be heard, don't we. Whether it's to advocate for ourselves or our child, we want action!

I've use Chat GPT several times and it has saved me from sending my ranty email. My emails are read and appreciated because they are succinct, to the point and set out with heading and bullet points to express my concerns clearly. If you're using a free version, which is fine of course, don't include any personal information. You can add that in when you review what 'Chatty' as I call him, has given you. I have a paid version which is private, but I still don't include personal details. I use Perplexity a lot because 'Eliot' gives a lot of references as to where he found the info. It gives areally concrete argument.

Here's how AI can help you handle these moments effectively:

  • Pause and Reflect:Before hitting "send," pause. Write down your raw thoughts privately first (without sending!).

  • Let AI Translate Your Anger:Use an AI tool (like ChatGPT or Perplexity) to rewrite your message into a calm, professional, and clear communication.

  • Review and Personalise:Adjust the AI-generated message slightly to reflect your authentic voice while maintaining professionalism.

Why use AI in these moments?

  • It prevents impulsive reactions that could harm future opportunities.

  • It ensures your concerns are communicated clearly without hostility.

  • It helps maintain positive connections for future interactions.

Remember, relationships matter. Using AI when you're upset can transform your communication from furious to focused, preserving valuable professional bridges.

Let me know how you go. I'd love to hear how you've used it.
